Well with a photo like this it's about time he bought an SLR, very impressed, wouldn't mind tackling some of those slopes when snow covered as well ;-)
Assuming it was taken on a compact p&s I agree with Chris.
If he had an SLR with a wide angle he would
be able to use a small AP (F16?) and get both the forground and background in focus.
Then into Photoshop with the raw file to enhance exposure - mountains and sky.
